The Washington Redskins' seventeenth season was in 1948, playing their home games at Griffith Stadium. During the offseason they hired John Whelchel to lead the team. Whelchel had never previously coached in the NFL in any capacity before the 1948 season. They finished the season 7-5-0, 4-2-0 at home and 3-3-0 on the road.
