The San Diego Chargers' thirty-eighth season was in 1997, playing their home games at Jack Murphy Stadium. During the offseason they hired Kevin Gilbride to lead the team. Gilbride previously was the offensive coordinator of the Jacksonville Jaguars and had eight years of coaching experience in the NFL. They finished the season 4-12-0, 2-6-0 at home and 2-6-0 on the road.
