The San Diego Chargers' twentieth season was in 1979, playing their home games at San Diego Stadium. During the offseason they promoted Don Coryell to lead the team. During his time in the NFL he was head coach for five years. They finished the year 12-4-0 in the regular season, en route to winning the AFC West, but they lost their first playoff game to the Houston Oilers 17-14.
