The Cleveland Browns' fortieth season was in 1985, playing their home games at Cleveland Stadium. During the offseason they promoted Marty Schottenheimer to lead the team. Schottenheimer previously was the interim head coach/defensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns and had ten years of coaching experience in the NFL. They finished the year 8-8-0 in the regular season, en route to winning the AFC Central, but they lost their first playoff game to the Miami Dolphins 24-21.
