Kansas City Chiefs at New England Patriots 42 to 27

Thursday, September 7, 2017, Week 1

The New England Patriots began their 2017 season at home against the Kansas City Chiefs. The game remained close through the first three quarters before the Chiefs scored the final 21 points of the game, eventually winning 42-27.

Chiefs’ quarterback Alex Smith became the first quarterback to throw for 300 yards, four touchdowns, and no interceptions against Patriots’ coach Bill Belichick, and the 42 points scored by the Chiefs were the most against a Belichick-led Patriots team in his 17 seasons as head coach. In addition, this was the first time the Patriots lost at Gillette Stadium when leading at halftime, a streak of 82 games.

Both teams' running backs made their marks on their new team. Chiefs' rookie running back Kareem Hunt had 246 yards from scrimmage, the most of any player making their debut since the NFL/AFL merger in 1970. The Patriots' running back Mike Gillislee was the first player since Terrell Owens in 2004 to score three touchdowns in their debut with a new team.
