Career Summary

Lovie Smith was a football coach in the National Football League (NFL) from 1989 to 2022, finishing his career as the head coach of the Houston Texans. Over his twenty-two years of coaching his teams compiled a cumulative win/loss record of 179-174-1. During his career he was a head coach for twelve seasons, first with the Chicago Bears. He led the Bears for nine seasons, compiling a record of 81-63-0. He was fired from the Bears on Monday, December 31, 2012. His next head coaching stint was with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2014 to 2015, as he led the team to a 8-24-0 record. He was fired from the Buccaneers on Wednesday, January 6, 2016. His third head coach placement began in 2022 with the Houston Texans. He coached them for one season and the team had a 3-13-1 record during his tenure. He was fired from the Texans on Sunday, January 8, 2023. Smith was fired just hours after the conclusion of the 2022 season. During his entire head coaching career, his three teams combined for a record of 92-100-1 across twelve seasons including going 3-3-0 in the playoffs.

Career Awards

Smith won the NFL's Coach of the Year award in 2005 after guiding the Bears to a 11-5-0 record and a a berth in the playoffs. During the 2005 season as the head coach of the Chicago Bears he coached Brian Urlacher to the AP Defensive Player of the Year.

During his time as head coach, three assistant coaches, (Ron Rivera, Steve Wilks, and Dirk Koetter) on his coaching staff were hired as head coaches across the league. His coaching tree has combined for a record of 124-145-2 in the regular season and 3-5 in the playoffs during their seventeen seasons as head coach after serving on his coaching staffs.

Personal Information

Smith was born on Thursday, May 8, 1958 in Gladewater, Texas. Him and his wife, MaryAnne, have three sons. Their youngest son, Miles, has coached for several years with Lovie.
